This was a broadcast of warmth, reaching out to him. During the cash-grab madness that dominated Wish You Were Here’s recording, Barrett’s stroll into another universe must have seemed tempting. The 12-string, played like it was beamed through some lost AM channel, gave the song of sense of nostalgia even during its creation, yearning for a time that could never be grasped again. The opening lyrics, “ So you think you can tell/ Heaven from hell” aren’t an indictment, but a wider question for all of Pink Floyd, past and present. Drugs, mental illness, a disgust at the world, a simple need for isolation or all of the above made one of the wildest and most creative artists of his time disappear into his own realm. But for five minutes, Floyd delivered “Wish You Were Here,” a completely unadorned love song and fond farewell to a friend a healing balm for Syd Barrett.īarrett’s self-imposed exile was commented upon frequently, but never truly understood. There were few sanctuaries in this musical world dominated by brain damage, dogs and bleeding machines. Even while marvelously raging against the establishment, there was a feeling of nihilism, of apathy. Conceptually then, the song features Waters as a doctor, offering a prognosis to Gilmour, whose inner drug-induced monologue emerges in the song’s chorus, but their dialogue, even in its simplicity, suggests heady topics of existentialism.
Penned by Waters, the song re-envisions his actual attempt to play a concert while on tranquilizers in 1977. From Roger Waters’ iconic opening line-“ Hello? Is there anybody in there?”-to David Gilmour’s critically lauded guitar solos, “Comfortably Numb” proves to be much more powerful than any drug.
